NEXT CLASS Saturday, May 11
10.00a to 12.00p

$125/person

Build your electronics skills with our 2-Hour lightsaber workshop. This hands-on class prepares you to dive into electronics projects in the Digital Design Lab and introduces you to the wide variety of equipment available in our shop AND you’ll take home your very own lightsaber.

Have you ever dreamed of building and powering up your own combat ready lightsaber? Well, under the expert guidance of saber master, Shaye, that dream is about to become reality! Dive into the world of electronics and craft your very own blade of light. Imagine the satisfaction you’ll feel as you bask in the electroluminescent glow of a saber you created yourself.

Learning electronics isn’t just about lightsabers (though that’s a pretty awesome perk), it unlocks a universe of creative possibilities. This class provides a solid foundation for further exploration of electronics. You’ll gain practical experience and a deeper understanding of how common electronics work and you’ll walk out empowered to bring your sci-fi dreams to life, from lightsabers to glowing costumes. You’ll learn (or refresh) a useful set of skills:

Electrical Fundamentals: understand electricity, voltage, and circuits.
Building Circuits: creating circuits to power your saber.
Soldering Technique: pick up this crucial skill for permanent circuits.

It’s a journey that starts with a single spark, so why not make it the ignition for your very own lightsaber? Ready to begin? The registration price includes all the materials you’ll need to create your own saber (batteries included)! There are no other prerequisites for this orientation.

INSTRUCTOR // Shaye Whitmer

For 16 years Shayé Whitmer has taught science, technology and art at The Evergreen School and helps run their makerspace. He has run numerous fabrication projects and often spends his time building lightsabers, making costumes, or blacksmithing. He got the wiring and electronics bug when seeing his kids play with toy lightsabers and then decided he wanted his own. This led to a journey of learning how to create a lightsaber from scratch. Shayé is eager to pass his accumulated wealth of knowledge on to adults as well as kids.

OVERVIEW

Soldering is a process used for joining metal parts to form a mechanical or electrical bond. It is widely used in the electronics industry for electrical connections, such as joining conductors to printed circuit boards. Solder is used to encapsulate a joint, prevent oxidation of the joint, and provide minor mechanical support for a connection. It typically uses a low melting point metal alloy (solder) which is melted and applied to the metal parts to be joined and this bonds to the metal parts and forms a connection when the solder solidifies.

If you are interested in electronics and want to dig deeper into the possibilities soldering opens up consider our Small Electronics Jumpstart. This crash course provides an engaging and fast paced introduction to soldering options. In this 2-hour class we will help you leverage basic connections into powerful and practical skills you can use right away to open up new opportunities to create. Before long soldering will become an indispensable tool in your prototyping toolkit. Along the way Shaye will provide expert tips and tricks to get better results.

ACCESS
After this introduction you’ll be prepared to safely and independently use the soldering equipment provided in our Digital Design Lab. This class, or a checkout, is a prerequisite for any upcoming advanced soldering trainings.

If this is your first class at The Facility please arrive 15 minutes early for a short safety briefing and some paperwork.

Orientations start promptly at 10:00am.

This Orientation prepares you to safely perform basic operations on supported equipment. It is not intended to cover design concepts or comprehensive operation of this equipment. If you are interested in learning more about design or advanced equipment operation look for additional upcoming classes.

Safety and Basic Use (SBU) Orientations at The Facility are open to anyone over 18 years old. Please feel free to pass this invitation on to others. Minimum enrollment of 5 people is required to hold the orientation.
