NEXT CLASS Wednesday, April 24
6.00p to 8.00p

$50/person

Build your electronics skills with our 2-Hour hands-on jumpstart. This introduction prepares you to dive into a variety of electronics projects in the Digital Design Lab.

Do you have a project with electrical components? A solid working understanding of basic electronics can get you moving forward. Maybe you’d like to know how to prototype with breadboards on your way to printed circuit boards (PCBs). Maybe you simply need to make critical wire connections for a motorcycle project. Register for the next available date and start your journey into the world of electronics!

This introductory workshop equips you with the basics of electronics, preparing you for a wide variety of projects. Whether it’s prototyping circuits or soldering connections, this course covers essential knowledge. In just 2 hours, you’ll learn:

Electrical fundamentals: Understand electricity, voltage, and circuits.
Building circuits: Create temporary circuits with alligator clips and wires.
Breadboard prototyping: Learn how and why to use breadboards for testing.
Soldering techniques: Master the art of soldering, a crucial skill for permanent circuits.

This hands-on class provides a solid foundation for further exploration of electronics. You’ll gain practical experience and a deeper understanding of how common electronics work.

INSTRUCTOR // Shaye Whitmer

For 16 years Shayé Whitmer has taught science, technology and art at The Evergreen School and helps run their makerspace. He has run numerous fabrication projects and often spends his time building lightsabers, making costumes, or blacksmithing. He got the wiring and electronics bug when seeing his kids play with toy lightsabers and then decided he wanted his own. This led to a journey of learning how to create a lightsaber from scratch. Shayé is eager to pass his accumulated wealth of knowledge on to adults as well as kids.

OVERVIEW

Soldering is a process used for joining metal parts to form a mechanical or electrical bond. It is widely used in the electronics industry for electrical connections, such as joining conductors to printed circuit boards. Solder is used to encapsulate a joint, prevent oxidation of the joint, and provide minor mechanical support for a connection. It typically uses a low melting point metal alloy (solder) which is melted and applied to the metal parts to be joined and this bonds to the metal parts and forms a connection when the solder solidifies.

If you are interested in electronics and want to explore the possibilities soldering opens up this intro to Basic Electronic Soldering is a brilliant place to start. This crash course provides an engaging and fast paced introduction to soldering options. In this 2-hour class we will help you leverage basic connections into powerful and practical skills you can use right away to open up new opportunities to create. Before long soldering will become an indispensable tool in your prototyping toolkit. Along the way Shaye will provide expert tips and tricks to get better results.

ACCESS
After this introduction you’ll be prepared to safely and independently use the soldering equipment provided in our Digital Design Lab. This class, or a checkout, is a prerequisite for any upcoming advanced soldering trainings.

If this is your first class at The Facility please arrive 15 minutes early for a short safety briefing and some paperwork.

Orientations start promptly at 6:00pm.

This Orientation prepares you to safely perform basic operations on supported equipment. It is not intended to cover design concepts or comprehensive operation of this equipment. If you are interested in learning more about design or advanced equipment operation look for additional upcoming classes.

Safety and Basic Use (SBU) Orientations at The Facility are open to anyone over 18 years old. Please feel free to pass this invitation on to others. Minimum enrollment of 5 people is required to hold the orientation.
