3D Scanner Orientation | NOV 14

$50.00

NEXT CLASS Thursday, November 14
6.00p to 8.00p

$50/person

This orientation clears you for independent access to our NextEngine Scanner.

Do you have a complex object you want to reproduce? Maybe you’re designing a new part that needs to mate to an existing structure? What if you’ve created a physical prototype you want to refine in CAD?

3D scanning enables you to bring real-world objects into the digital world.

If you are interested in embracing this amazing new technology our Basic Equipment Operation (BEO) Orientation gives you everything you need to know to turn physical objects into 3D models on your computer. In this 2-hour orientation you will learn how to use the 3D scanner as a key link in our breakthrough atoms>bits<atoms workflow.

There are no other prerequisites for this orientation. To register, click on the next available date (highlighted in green below) and check out through the shopping cart.

INSTRUCTOR // David Voetmann

David, a lifelong designer and maker, spent his childhood in Africa. This formative experience instilled a conviction that it’s better to create your own solutions than to wait around hoping someone else will solve your problems. To this end, he earned a BFA in Industrial Design at the University of Washington. This study deepened an enduring conviction that solving problems and making things is deeply coded into our humanity. Over the last few years he has explored the transformation of our economy as new technologies begin to democratize opportunity. He now runs The Facility Makerspace where ordinary people with extraordinary ideas gain access to an 11,000sf sandbox for innovation with all the tools, training, and community people need to turn thoughts into things. He still believes that, while technology is great, we need to focus on solutions not tools.

David lives in Shoreline with his wife Ruth.

OVERVIEW

3D scanning technology is becoming increasingly valuable in a surprisingly diverse range of industries. We are seeing it more frequently used in the entertainment industry in the development process of movies, video games, and virtual reality applications. In the product world 3D scanning is increasingly common in industrial design, prosthetics, reverse engineering, prototyping, quality control, and the preservation of historical or cultural artifacts.

In this 2-hour class, we provide a crash course that covers object prep, scanning strategies, and post processing of your digital model. You will learn everything you need to know to turn physical objects into 3d models on your computer.

We will start with a brief look at how 3D scanners work and then dive into our NextEngine hardware/software package. You’ll get hands-on experience as you learn how to operate the scanner to capture surface geometry and then apply our fixup workflow to repair and edit your models so they are ready to be used. We will also explore how to translate your surface model into a solid model. Along the way you’ll pick up tips and tricks to get better results.

ACCESS
Pass this orientation, or a checkout, and you’ll walk away with access privileges to independently operate our NextEngine scanner. This is also a prerequisite for our upcoming advanced 3D scanning trainings.
