When Scratch Distillery wanted to leave their mark on an open wall outside the Cascadia Art Museum they partnered with The Facility to develop and produce something special.
You see, Scratch came to fame distilling small batch gins that are handcrafted to perfection. Their logo is a composite image created from hundreds of icons representing the botanicals Kim Karrick employs to infuse their spirits with Award Winning flavor profiles. We thought it would be amazing to blow the logo up to human scale so the public could interact with it both at a distance as well as close up where you can really absorb the complexity of ingredients that make up the whole. It seemed like an artful analogy of what the Karricks bring to spirits enthusiasts every day.
The catch? How to create and efficiently install a giant 6ft “S” made up of over 800 individual shapes arranged in a highly precise design? The solution? We used the laser cutters at The Facility to cut each individual piece from 1/4in Baltic Birch Plywood. Yes, 800+ individual parts and that was the easy task. The innovative breakthrough was designing the project so the waste material provided an interlocking template from the 8 sheets that came off our 18in x 32in laser bed. This could be used for keeping all the parts organized and installed in the right place.
The entire work was installed in one long evening. If you are ever in Edmonds stop in and take a look. Then slip into Scratch to experience why they say Gin Equals Love.
